Ashness Cottage in Ambleside offers a prime location with stunning views, convenient parking, and is well-equipped for exploring the Lake District. Guests appreciate the new kitchen, comfortable beds, and overall homeliness. While some find the property dated and suggest improvements, the positive aspects like cleanliness and recent upgrades are often highlighted.
Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests noting the property is clean, with fresh bedding and towels, while others mention dust, cobwebs, and pet hairs. The presence of carpet in the bathroom has been highlighted as unhygienic by some visitors.
The location is highly praised for its proximity to Ambleside's town centre, pubs, and restaurants, as well as its accessibility to walking and cycling routes. The private parking space is also appreciated.
Comfort receives positive remarks for good beds and a fantastic shower, but there are criticisms regarding dated decor, uncomfortable seating, and the need for blackout curtains and better mattresses.
Facilities are seen as adequate with a well-equipped kitchen and good heating, but several guests report maintenance issues such as leaks, flickering lights, and problems with the heating system. The lack of Wi-Fi and a hairdryer has been noted.
There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the property owners towards the guests. Therefore, this category cannot be scored.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Everything about it was spot-on - we had a great stay and will definitely return to this property. The only (tiniest of) niggle was the location of the wifi info - it could do with greater prominence. It's written in the corner of a page of the visitor book in such small writing that I managed to completely cover it with my (not particularly large) thumb while leafing through the book in search of it. Took me an age to eventually spot it. Maybe a small notice on the dresser would be helpful.

Could not work out the heating which came on during the evening and was very hot. Other than that, good location.

Our second visit and we would definitely book again. A few issues with damp needs rectifying but overall a really great place to stay.
