Guests say

Fir Tree Cottage is a characterful property with a beautiful garden, praised for its peaceful location and proximity to Grasmere. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, and well-equipped kitchen. The enclosed garden is a hit with dog owners, and the cottage's original features add to its charm. While some guests mention low beams and the challenge of navigating parked cars, the overall sentiment is positive, with many looking forward to returning.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Most guests found the cottage to be clean and tidy, with comfortable beds and good quality linen. However, a few guests noted areas where cleanliness could be improved, particularly in the kitchen. The majority of reviews do not raise cleanliness as an issue, suggesting that the property is generally well-maintained.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity and convenience, with easy access to local amenities and walking paths. The proximity to Grasmere and the ability to enjoy nature from the doorstep are frequently mentioned as highlights, contributing to a high score for location.

Guests find the beds very comfortable and the living spaces cosy, particularly with the wood burner. However, tall guests have mentioned the need to be cautious of low beams and doorways. The comfort of the property is generally well-regarded, though some guests suggest improvements could be made.

The cottage is well-equipped with a modern kitchen and spacious bathrooms. Some guests experienced issues with hot water pressure and the usability of the bathtub. The separate laundry facilities and occasional maintenance issues, such as a leaky roof and smoke detector problems, have led to a slightly lower score.

While guests have not specifically mentioned gifts, they have appreciated the personal touches like fresh flowers and the organisation of kitchen tools. However, there is not enough information to score thoughtfulness based on gifts, as they are not consistently referenced or guaranteed.

About this property

Resting on a sleepy lane within the scenic village of Grasmere, is the charming and traditional dwelling of Fir Tree Cottage. Surrounded by the beautiful vistas of the Lake District National Park, this homely abode provides an idyllic base for a family or group of six seeking an incredible adventure in the great outdoors. Spend cold winter evenings snuggled up to loved ones in the warm and inviting sitting room, watching movies on the flat-screen TV whilst flames flicker within the striking woodburning stove. Cross the gorgeous slate floors over to the farmhouse kitchen, home to a plethora of appliances and utensils that lie within the stunning oak cabinets, all of which can be used to help rustle up some delicious home-cooked meals throughout your stay. Serve up at the lovely kitchen table or gather with friends in the dining room for a more formal set up. Completing the ground floor is an airy bathroom with a large P-shaped tub and an overhead shower, so that you can choose to start your mornings with a relaxing soak or a brisk rinse. Two staircases will lead you up to an additional bathroom hosting an impressive roll top bath, as well as three bedrooms consisting of a king-size, a super-king and a twin. Outside, a pretty garden with outdoor seating offers a tranquil space to unwind with a book and a refreshing glass of wine as you delight in a moment of peace and quiet following a fun-filled day in the countryside. Grasmere is one of the few places in the UK where you can still find red squirrels and you can often spot these delightful creatures when staying at the cottage. The owners support the Grasmere Red Squirrel Group with a donation for every week the cottage is booked. No visit to Grasmere is complete without some scenic fell walking, and the nearby Helm Crag provides some exceptional views of the encompassing landscapes. More experienced hikers should be sure to explore Helvellyn, Fairfield, Red Screes and Scafell Pike, whilst even the most novice of walkers will enjoy an afternoon in Green Gable. Fun is to be had at attractions such as Treetop Lake District and Puzzling Place, and visitors should be sure to meet the exotic creatures of the Lake District Wildlife Park. Learn of the life of William Wordsworth with tours of the historical Wordsworth Grasmere and Rydal Mount & Gardens, both former places of residence for the famous poet, and see the ancient remains of Ambleside Roman Fort and the imposing Neo-gothic fortress of Wray Castle. With so much at your fingertips, it’s little wonder that Fir Tree Cottage makes a splendid choice for any holiday to the Lake District.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

There were 5 adults and a dog staying and there was plenty of room for us all to be comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and the cottage had lots of personal touches )books and games) to keep us amused. Would happily stay here again on our next trip to the area.

Wonderful garden, no lake or fell views but charming, wooded and well kept, full of birds and occasional red squirrel. In full sun throughout the day in May. Inside quirky room arrangement, low ceilings full of charecter but with adequate space for sleeping six adults. Very comfortable beds, clean with luxury linen. Exceptionally well equipped kitchen with modern white goods and appliances. Two large bathrooms, big roll top bath. Best soak ever! No walk in shower but an efficient and effective electric shower over ground floor bath. Cosy, low ceiling, front room. Adequate WiFi throughout house. Bin regime a bit of a drag and parking tight, with bird poo all over one car unavoidable!! Overall a wonderfully located residence in v.quite lane. We had a fantastic week!!

This time, the fresh flowers were a lovely touch, and the better organisation of the kitchen tools worked well. However, the beds seem to have changed again and we found them quite hard. Also, the shower in the downstairs bathroom is fine, but it would be great to have one that wasn't in a bath as we get older. Finally, while we love this property, we paid 50% more this time than previously and the 'value for money' element is in danger of tipping the wrong way.
