Guests that stayed at this property said

Cleanliness has received mixed reviews. Some guests found the cottage neat upon arrival, but others noted it only had a superficial clean with issues like cobwebs and a soiled nappy found. A few guests also mentioned a need for a new cleaner and improved attention to cleaning.

The location is highly praised for its convenience to local pubs, shops, and walking routes. The charm of the surrounding Lake District area is a highlight, although parking can be challenging during peak seasons.

Comfort is generally well-regarded with mentions of comfy beds and a cosy atmosphere. However, some guests have suggested that the sofas and beds could be updated for enhanced comfort.

Facilities are appreciated, particularly the well-equipped kitchen. However, there are comments about the need for more kitchenware, an update to the TV, and minor maintenance issues like broken gates and windows painted shut.

There is no mention of gifts or special thoughtful touches provided by the host, so it is not possible to score this category.

About this property

Located in the heart of the Lake District's spectacular Langdale Valley, adjacent to the crystal clear waters of Langdale Beck, this traditional Lakeland cottage is built from local slate and is a wonderful retreat. Oozing with charm and character this property has been lovingly renovated, but still retains much of the original appeal - an ideal place to relax and unwind.

Situated just a short stroll from the centre of the village of Chapel Stile, with a local shop and the excellent Wainwright's Inn, this lovely cottage offers a warm welcome from the moment you enter it. The living space offers a cosy place to relax and has a log burning stove and from the picture window in the kitchen, there are views of the cottage garden, woods, fields and glimpses of the fells beyond. There’s also a patio where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or morning coffee. The master bedroom offers a super king size bed (this can also be split to make a fine twin room - please specify when booking), whilst the second bedroom is a double.

There are numerous wonderful walks straight from the front door and so little need for the car. Enjoy a walk beside the river to Skelwith Force Waterfall, spend a day exploring the Langdale pikes or simply marvelling at the valley’s stunning scenery.

There are two great country pubs just a short distance away and amenities of the Langdale Country Club (not included but bookable direct) close at hand. Weir Cottage is a great escape for those wanting to unwind and enjoy the best of the Lake District.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

It’s a shame basics were missing, no soap, no washing up liquid, no tea or coffee, lack of china and glasses. TV also very poor, (not smart TV).

2 things to bear in mind: the fridge is very small - one of those your nana used to have with a little freezer compartment at the top - so don't bother arriving with a big shop of food that needs refrigeration or a freezer; the other thing is parking - it's perfectly doable as there's a layby on the same side of the road as the cottage about 150 yds up toward the village shop. We were able to park there throughout our stay no problem. Use the local bus service if you want to pop into Ambleside for shopping - much more convenient than faffing about parking etc (and we have a blue badge). If you do go food shopping in Ambleside and you're not a vegetarian we highly recommend Garside butchers - first class. Lovely walks nearby and v dog friendly. Thank you.
