Venture over to Saltburn-by-the-Sea for a relaxing ride on the Saltburn Cliff Tramway, the oldest water-balanced funicular still open in Great Britain, and take in the breath-taking vistas and centre of town, before descending back to the beach and wandering along the bustling pier, Saltburn’s beach being popular with surfers and home to several surf schools with equipment hire. Admire the well-manicured lawns of the Saltburn Valley Gardens and see the Grade II listed building of The Old Mortuary, both well worth a visit. Marske-by-the-Sea is a small, bustling coastal village with long, wide, sandy beaches. Originally an old fishing village, today it has a selection of local shops and pubs, which cater for all the family, plus the safe, sandy beaches, sand dunes and fishing boats are an enticing attraction. Places of interest nearby include Captain Cook's birthplace, the mining museum, and the Zetland Lifeboat Museum. Within easy reach of this quaint village is a horse riding centre, the stunning scenery of the North York Moors, through which runs a steam railway line, and the numerous pretty inland villages and fishing villages including Staithes and Runswick Bay. The old Victorian spa town of Saltburn is just 3 miles away and it's an easy drive to other seaside resorts such as Whitby. A great base from which to tour the area.
