Guests say

Holly Lodge receives high praise for its cleanliness, comfort, and particularly its well-thought-out facilities for disabled guests. The property offers a peaceful environment with lovely views and a spacious interior. The hosts are noted for their helpfulness and attentiveness. While some guests mention traffic noise from the nearby A66, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Guests consistently describe the property as very clean and well-maintained, with no negative comments on cleanliness, indicating a high standard upheld by the hosts.

The location is appreciated for its beautiful views and proximity to local attractions. However, some guests note the presence of traffic noise from the A66, which slightly impacts the tranquillity for light sleepers.

The lodge is frequently described as comfortable, with special mention of the cosy living area, comfortable beds, and the warmth of the property. The spaciousness adds to the comfort level experienced by guests.

Facilities are highly regarded, especially the adaptations for wheelchair users, such as wide doors and a well-equipped wet room. Suggestions for improvements include better placement of kitchen items and the addition of a dishwasher.

While the reviews reflect the hosts' thoughtfulness in providing a well-equipped property and being attentive to guests' needs, there is no specific mention of gifts, so it is not possible to score this category.

About this property

Holly Lodge is a charming, cosy retreat on the edge of the historic market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland in the Eden Valley district of Cumbria. This charming cottage is a perfect base for families, friends or couples to get away together. The cottage forms part of The Hollies, once a gentlemen's residence. It was built as a museum to house the owner's hunting trophies gained during his time as an army officer returning from the Zulu War and to accommodate his billiard table! Built around 1895, some of the original Scots Pine cladding is still intact. Inside this delightful cottage there is a ground floor super king-size double bedroom and a family bathroom with a separate wet room shower with shower chair. On the first floor there's a king-size double bedroom, a bedroom with three single beds and a shower room. The cottage also has a well-equipped kitchen with fully accessible height-adjustable work surfaces, and a dining area and a sitting area with a woodburner, so you can sit back and unwind after a busy day out. The ground floor of this property has been designed with wheelchair users in mind and there is level, paved access to the back door. There is a private patio with furniture where you can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink before exploring the beautiful garden, which extends to around three acres, and is a heady mixture of wild flowers and woodland, and has superb views of the North Pennines. The amenities in Appleby-in-Westmorland are on the doorstep and include pubs, cafes, restaurants and many other attractions. This delightful cottage is close to open countryside and is perfect for walkers and hikers. This dog-friendly cottage offers accommodation to suit everyone and walkers and cyclists will be in their element with The Pennine Way, Pennine Hills, two National Cycle Trails (68 and 71) and secure bike storage. There's also the long-distance footpaths of The Dales Highway, Lady Anne's Way, and Wainwright's Pennine Journey leading to Appleby. The Settle-Carlisle Railway runs through Appleby and the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are an easy drive. A lovely country retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two national parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct.

Very well equipped especially for people with a disability. Jan and John are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble should a problem arise. The rooms are larger than we expected and well maintained. The situation is perfect although it is near to a busy highway it is quiet inside the cottage so no sleep problems. Very large grounds approximately 3 acres and very private. Suitable for couples or families. Altogether a lovely place.
