Guests say

Stanfree House is a well-liked cottage in the picturesque village of Winster, appreciated for its comfortable beds, cosy atmosphere, and convenient location opposite a village shop. The property's rustic charm and proximity to local attractions and walks in the Peak District are frequently praised. While some guests have raised concerns about cleanliness and maintenance, the overall sentiment is positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Cleanliness has received mixed reviews. Some guests found the cottage clean and cosy, particularly the bedrooms, while others noted issues with cleanliness in the lounge, kitchen, and under furniture. The presence of dog hair and a dirty oven were mentioned, suggesting room for improvement.

The location is highly regarded, with guests enjoying the village setting and proximity to local amenities and attractions. The convenience of having a shop across the road and nearby pubs is frequently mentioned. However, some guests noted noise from the street, slightly impacting the score.

Comfort is a strong point for Stanfree House, with numerous guests complimenting the comfortable beds and cosy atmosphere. The presence of a log fire adds to the comfort level, although some guests mentioned issues with heating and seating outside.

Facilities are generally well-received, with a well-stocked kitchen and comfortable furnishings. However, some guests reported maintenance issues such as non-working lights and a lack of certain kitchen utensils, which suggests that while adequate, the facilities could benefit from attention.

There is insufficient information to assess thoughtfulness as there are no specific mentions of gifts or special touches that would indicate the level of consideration for guests' experiences. Therefore, this score is set to null.

About this property

A mid-terrace stone cottage located in the heart of Winster, a homely village with an abundance of characterful amenities resting on your doorstep. Situated over three floors, this retreat takes you inside to a comfortable lounge, neutrally styled with two sofas and a woodburner promising a cosy night in. A dining table is located to the back of the room, with seating for four people, and a window seat is a beautiful feature overlooking the charming village. The modern kitchen provides all the amenities to prepare your favourite meals. On a nice day, you can even enjoy refreshments in your own enclosed courtyard, a lovely little suntrap away from it all. After a delightful day, wander upstairs to the super king-size double bedroom, an immaculate presentation with soft furnishings and a heart-warming ambience. Take the stairs from here, and you will find a twin room, equally as pleasant, with fresh white bedding and characterful low ceilings. The family bathroom completes the accommodation in a contemporary fashion. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. There are also two pubs, both serving traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. A perfect location all-season-round.

With an impressive 17th century market house at its centre, the conservation village of Winster is situated within the Peak District National Park. This extremely pretty location is mostly composed of three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank boasting imposing 18th Century farm houses, nearly all of which are at least three storeys tall.

It was also in a good position for us, close to bus stops and the excellent village shop. Our only real issue with the house was the poor lighting. The bathroom and kitchen were particularly dark and it was difficult to prepare food in the kitchen with light coming from just one, dim central bulb. We also brought down the lamp from the attic bedroom to use at the living room table. It seemed as if these problems could easily be solved by better light fittings. However, we still had a wonderful break - Winster is a beautiful village and there was great food and drink at the friendly Miners Standard.
