This charming cottage is beautifully sited on the cliff top above Freshwater Bay in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are spectacular sea views of the bay and South coast from the cottage and garden, as well as fine views of Tennyson Down. Visitors can walk down for a swim in Freshwater Bay in less than five minutes. Walkers have immediate access across adjacent National Trust land to Tennyson Down and the coastal path to the Needles at the Western tip of the Island.
Moonfleet was built in the 1850s, originally as accommodation for the chief gunner stationed at the nearby Fort Redoubt. The cottage was completely rebuilt to modern standards in 2009 and is furnished and equipped with care to provide attractive and comfortable accommodation for two people. The accommodation is open-plan, but with partial walls which gives each room a feeling of separation. There is a fitted kitchen with an electric cooker and ceramic induction hob, microwave and refrigerator with freezer section. There is a pleasant sitting room and dining area with a sofa and a Smart TV. A modern wood burning stove provides a relaxing atmosphere to both the bedroom and lounge.
The bedroom with a double bed, and hanging space has a door which opens into the garden. There is a cloakroom with a WC and large basin, plus a separate wet room (one step down and narrowing to 2ft wide) with a shower providing constant hot water. The wood burner provides the main heating in the cottage in combination with freestanding electric heaters. Logs are provided. (Private use of washing machine/freezer in the nearby Fort Redoubt which is being converted into private accommodation by the owners of Moonfleet).
Moonfleet is surrounded by a private open plan garden of lawns which extend to the nearby cliff edge. Visitors are therefore asked to take the utmost care when in the garden. Guests can unload luggage in an area just above the garden and park a car in the Fort courtyard which is under a minute's walk away. General stores are within a ten-minute stroll, and a public house, tea room, cafe, and regular bus service are within a five minutes walk. A greater choice of shops are available in the nearby town of Freshwater which is a five-minute drive.
