Just a mile down the road is the historic fishing village of Polperro with its winding streets, once a thriving centre for smugglers. The pretty village cottages are perched on steep slopes overlooking the harbour. Sample some local produce in one of the many cafés and restaurants Polperro has to offer, or head to the inner harbour, still a working harbour to this day and full of colourful boats.

Looe can be reached by a two mile coastal walk or just a short drive. The long harbour wall stretches up to the Victorian bridge, where you can take a trip over to Looe Island and explore the rock pools or go crabbing, you may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the grey seal colony. Relax on the sandy beach in Looe, paddle in the sea or roam around the shops, museums and galleries. The locally renowned fish market sells fish straight off the boats from the harbour, something for a special dinner perhaps. The bays of Talland, Whitsand and Lantic offer paddling and bathing against the stunning scenery of the dramatic backdrop that is the south coast of Cornwall.

There is so much to see and do, not only around the local area but further afield. Visit the famous Eden Project and the Lost Garden of Heligan, both within a 40-minute drive. The seafaring ports of Charlestown, famous for the filming of ‘Poldark’, Fowey renowned for its annual Royal Regatta, literary and arts festivals - including the Daphne Du Maurier festival in May, and Mevagissey the pretty working harbour full of Cornish charm, are all within this area. Rosamunde Pilcher is a famous local author who conjures up pictures of the landscape and scenery of Cornwall, and you can visit the many places she writes about in her books.

If you head away from the coast there are many attractions inland, including the Slate Caverns near St Neot and Bodmin Moor. Fishing, boat trips, horse riding and golf are all available locally. Beach 2 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

We booked this place just before lockdown started and had worries of not being able to make it. Fortunately we were and boy are we glad. The place it’s self was beautiful, everything there what we needed. Modern, peaceful and very enjoyable.

Upon arrival, the lodge wasn’t ready even though we arrived after the check in time. It was still being cleaned, although when we did get the keys, it wasn’t clean, which was of particular concern considering Covid. There wasn’t enough beds made up so I had to get more bedding from reception to make them up. The double bed had 2 mattresses on, which made it feel like you were on a boat as it swayed about. I had to clean the lodge and wipe down everything with anti bac. There was dust everywhere and the furniture had food debris and smelt. The door to the decking is blocked by a sofa so was difficult to get out of and once out there the table and chairs couldn’t be used as it was covered in dirt, rust and the table had bolts missing. The shower in the en-suite didn’t drain, so couldn’t be used either. The park itself was nice and clean and the bins on site were all emptied, so the condition of this lodge was extremely disappointing. Not at all worth the money it cost for a week in August.
