Enjoy long walks along the South Cornwall coast then return to this stylish lodge to luxuriate in the shared sauna or steam room for a spell. The three-bedroom, Scandinavian-style retreat nestles in the wooded grounds of a hotel near Trewhiddle, 1 mile from St Austell. It sleeps six guests and welcomes a canine companion. Guests also have the benefit of the hotel’s leisure facilities, including a pool, sauna, steam room, gym and tennis courts.

Wander into the stylish hideaway to discover it has a creative reverse-level layout to enable you to look out over the leafy grounds from your upstairs living space. At ground-floor level, you will find your sumptuous bedrooms. These include a super-king-size, which can also be made up as a twin if discussed in advance, a twin and a double bedroom. The family bathroom and an en-suite bathroom are also downstairs. Head up to the first floor to the open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. This exceptionally airy space, which has a vaulted ceiling and features lots of wood, is a perfect place to gather after your trips out. Cook together in the kitchen, with its granite work surfaces, dine at the table and unwind in front of the TV on the nights you choose to stay in. On warm days, unwind out on your private balcony, take a stroll around the grounds or cook in the fresh air out on the shared BBQ patio.

Head to St Austell to shop, dine out or visit the Pinetum Gardens. Truro, 15 miles away, is also an interesting place to spend an afternoon. Tire your pup’s paws out on a long walk along the South West Coast Path. Swim, sunbathe or play on the sand at Porthpean Beach, 2 miles from your base, or Pentewan Beach, 3 miles away.
