Guests say

Bow Cottage in Devon offers stunning views and a well-equipped kitchen, with guests appreciating its character and location for walks and local attractions. The comfortable beds and peaceful setting are frequently praised, though some guests suggest improvements in cleanliness and maintenance.

Several reviews mention issues with cleanliness, including dog hair, spiders webs, and stained items, suggesting a need for more thorough cleaning. However, not all reviews mention cleanliness problems.

The location is highly praised for its stunning views, peacefulness, and proximity to walking paths and local attractions. It is considered a highlight of the property.

Guests find the beds very comfortable and the cottage cosy, though some mention the furniture in the lounge is a bit worn and the seating could be improved.

The well-equipped kitchen and bathroom facilities are appreciated, but there are comments about the need for maintenance, such as the underfloor heating not working and issues with the blinds and garden upkeep.

While some guests were disappointed by the lack of welcome items such as bread, milk, and sufficient toilet rolls, these amenities are not consistently mentioned across reviews, and it is politely noted that such gifts are not guaranteed.

About this property

Bow Cottage is a traditional dog friendly terraced cottage, stylishly furnished and equipped to a very good standard throughout, in a sought-after position in the heart of East Portlemouth village. A pleasant 7/10 minute downhill walk to the sandy beaches of the estuary, this is a wonderful base for exploring the area. The Salcombe ferry runs between East Portlemouth and the main town throughout the year, giving access to the town's shops and pubs. In the High Season, the Harbour Master operates an evening water taxi service too!

The property boasts lovely estuary views from both the front and back, but particularly from the master bedroom. On the ground floor, there is a cosy sitting room and a stylishly finished kitchen with electric Aga, table seating 6, and French doors onto very small balcony with estuary views.

On the first floor, the property has two bedrooms - a double bedroom with superb 6' bed and large picture window, and a twin room with 3' single beds. On the lower ground floor level (below kitchen) is a further open space/den (best suited for children, and adjacent to the bathroom) with a 3' single bed and further 3' mattress on a pull-out truckle base. This room doesn't have a window but is very airy, and is offered only as an alternative sleeping option (maximum occupancy is four plus a baby). The family bathroom is also on the lower floor with roll top bath and power shower.

With a large rear garden and parking usually available outside, guests looking for a comfortable property in a great position need look no further!

East Portlemouth is a peaceful village nestled on the southern edge of the Kingsbridge Estuary in the South Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The small number of properties that make up this settlement are scattered on the hillside and around the cliff, with part of the village once being home to Coastguards employed during the nineteenth century to prevent any smuggling on this section of the South West Coast Path.

Nowadays the village consists of the Venue Café and a number of tiny peaceful beaches, some only accessible by boat, including Fisherman's Cove, Smalls Cove and Mill Bay, all of which have been awarded Safe Bathing status. Further inland situated creekside, is the pretty village of South Pool with its delightful pub, the Millbrook Inn. A haven for food-lovers, this establishment serves a heady combination of fresh English ingredients with traditional Galic cooking. Just across the estuary is the popular sailing town of Salcombe with its charming waterfront, independent boutiques and popular cafés, bars and restaurants, which can be reached easily by passenger ferry. The sandy beaches of North Sands and South Sands are also within easy reach. Further down the coast are the historic naval town of Dartmouth and the bustling city of Plymouth with its museums, aquarium, theatres, shopping and the Barbican.

Very practical for the beaches too. Cleanliness was a bit lacking though, there were a lot of cobwebs and dog hair around. The shower didn't drain very well (probably a bit blocked?) which meant we had to shower in the bath to avoid completely flooding the bathroom.

It proved a good choice: small but comfortable, and plenty of character.

The cottage has lots of lovely features and comfortable beds. Such a shame that housekeeping left a lot to be desired. I found dirty clothes in the washing machine and personal belongings of others under the side board . There was lots of hair in the bathroom plug and a very dirty mop for drying the bathroom floor. Toilet brush was revolting and rusting so the floor had lots of rust marks on. The shower curtain was discolored from water damage. . The fridge drain was dirty and the oven gloves were heavily stained and the dishwasher was out of salts. Such a shame we were greeted with such an array of issues, first impressions really do count. You don't expect to have to highlight so many basic housekeeping tasks to a company who manage holiday accommodation. Please be aware you MUST spend time valuable time of your holiday getting in touch with the agent,. and arranging for issues to be resolved. Don't address the issues yourself and then let the agent know.
