About this property

This pretty holiday cottage is in the tiny hamlet of Cudlipptown, in the heart of Dartmoor National Park within walking distance of a popular country pub and only a few miles from the lively market town of Tavistock. It is the perfect destination for a romantic escape with countryside walks on the doorstep and miles of national park to explore on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Plymouth and Exeter are both within easy reach, as are beaches at Bude and Wembury.

Stable Cottage will appeal to couples who like the idea of adventure but who want to escape in comfort. The welcoming one-bedroom converted barn is on the owner's property in the Dartmoor National Park and enjoys far-reaching views across the Tamar Valley towards Cornwall. There are beautiful walks and bike rides from the front door, including a route leading to the friendly Peter Tavy Inn just a mile from the cottage.

The raw beauty of Dartmoor's landscape makes it a place of mystery and romance, leading to myths and legends growing up around the moors and hills. Whether or not the tales of ghosts, fairies and other unnatural creatures have any truth behind them, the often-lonely moors, changeable weather and ancient monuments like the Grey Wethers Stone Circle or Spinster's Stone make it easy to understand how the tales evolved. One of the best known Dartmoor landmarks is Hound Tor, believed to have inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and an excellent destination for a walk and a picnic on a sunny day.

A walk is never "just" a walk in the Dartmoor National Park because there is always something unusual to see or find. Those who enjoy a physical challenge will relish the opportunity to scale Dartmoor's highest point at High Willhays, which rewards walkers with successful views. Closer to home, the old railway line from Dousland to Princetown is now a walking and cycling path, and the long-distance Drake's Trail passes nearby with an especially lovely section between Tavistock and Crowndale. Geocachers will be in their element with access to some 600 hidden caches around Dartmoor. Guests at Stable Cottage also have access to five private acres of fields with a path that leads to a brook.

The vibrant community of Tavistock is only three miles from the cottage and easily reached by bike or on foot if you choose to leave the car behind. The historic stannary town's fortunes were built on the nearby tin mines although the Pannier Markets have been operating since 1105. Tavistock has an excellent choice of other shops as well as places to eat and drink and is a lovely place to while away a lazy day shopping.

Nearby attractions include Buckland Abbey, Castle Drogo and A La Ronde as well as other National Trust houses and gardens. Further afield but still within reach for a day out are beaches like Bude and Wembury as well as the cities of Plymouth and Exeter, while the famous Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are not much further.

A holiday at Stable Cottage can be as peaceful or adventurous as you choose. The quiet rural location means your nearest neighbours are the owner's horse and draft horse in the barn across the yard, but the proximity of thriving towns and cities plus the entire Dartmoor National Park on the doorstep offers excitement and adventure.
