Butterrow Gate is an eye-catching property which sleeps two guests, in one lovely bedroom, with a ground floor bathroom. This unique Grade II listed property was constructed in 1825 as the toll house to service the turnpike road linking Stroud to Cirencester, and is one of the few toll houses in the UK to still have the original wooden toll charges board fixed to the front of the building.
An early example of Gothic architectural revival built from Cotswold stone, Butterrow Gate retains many character features including stone mullion windows, exposed Cotswold stone walls, flagstone flooring and a Cotswold stone fireplace with a woodburning stove. Modern facilities such as wireless internet access, a Freesat TV with DVD player, and underfloor heating complement the traditional features, and there is an elevated patio garden with stunning views.
The front door leads to an entrance hall which contains the washing machine and is a useful speace to store coats and muddy boots. Located off the entrance hall is the bathroom with a walk-in shower, toilet, wash basin and heated towel rail.
On the ground floor is the living/dining room containing the sofa, armchair, a drop down wooden leaf table with two chairs and a Cotswold stone fire place with wood burning stove.
Completing the ground floor is a small but well-designed kitchen.
Stairs lead up from the living/dining room straight into the master double bedroom with an abundance of character features including original elm floorboards, exposed Cotswold stone walls and stone mullion windows, this room has panoramic views of Stroud and the beautiful countryside.
The stable door from the bedroom leads out to the enclosed patio garden, the patio has a small glass walkway, three stone steps lead up to a terrace with spectacular views of Stroud and the fields beyond.
Butterrow Gate is located on the outskirts of the bustling market town of Stroud, famed for its independent shops, galleries and cafes. Stroud hosts an award-winning Farmers' Market every Saturday, and there is an organic farm shop just a short drive from the property. The town has a wide range of restaurants and pubs, the closest to Butterrow Gate being The Prince Albert Inn which is dog friendly and often has live music nights.
Surrounded by the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a variety of walks from the front door including onto the national trust 'Rodborough Common, which has spectacular views across Woodchester Valley and to the River Seven on a clear day. The River Frome flows through Stroud itself and has a pleasant towpath which follows the course of the river, passing by the Stroud Brewery, just a half hour stroll from the property. Stroud is well placed for visiting the many historic towns of the South Cotswolds, including Painswick, Nailsworth, Minchinhampton and Cirencester. Further afield destinations such as Bath, Cheltenham and Oxford are within easy reach for day trips.
The town of Stroud is known as the less commercial corner of the Cotswolds, a somewhat bohemian collection of buildings, squares and lanes, tucked into the green hills which once housed countless sheep during the town’s time as the centre of the Cotswold’s woollen industry. Today, Stroud welcomes visitors to its friendly cafes, quaint bookshops, independent shops and tempting eateries. Described by Jasper Conran as the ‘Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’, Stroud has a regular farmers' market, year-round programmes of music and theatre, a thriving arts scene and a state-of-the-art cinema. For simply relaxing, Stratford Park on the edge of town offers lakeside walks, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a museum. Head out of town to explore the five sweeping valleys which surround it, with country lanes just made for walking or cycling.

It should not be assumed that everyone knows how to use an induction cooker. A set of do's and dont's ought to be provided. eg cleaning of the top should be done using a cloth dampened with a little CLEAR water only, otherwise the top will not "induct". Incidentally, the drying function on the washing machine does not work. It does wash and spin, but the use of the drying function prompted a message saying something like "maintenance required". Also I do feel that the proprietor should make a point of speaking to guests IN PERSON, preferably when they first arrive and ouline what I have called "Do's and Dont's" at that time. Do not assume that everyone is familiar with the technology provided. On the plus side, the owner did respond to our calls, visiting the property on the same day. However, her intervention had mixed results. After her departure we found that the television worked, but the sound had gone, and no amount of efforts by ourselves would restore it. The beds were warm and comfortable.

The cottage is so beautifully and tastefully furnished & presented. We enjoyed the Stroud Saturdays farmers market, the slaughters , Tetbury & Cirencester etc. I have read âCider with roseâ and loved visiting Slad and seeing the âWoolpackâ Laura Leeâs stomping ground!

It is decorated and furnished to a very high standard and perfect for a couple. It is ideal for hikers as very close to a number of walks over various commons with great views. Stroud centre is only 20 minutes walk away and I would particularly recommend the Saturday market. The car parking space is very close by. This is definitely one of the best properties I have rented. Only drawback would be it is on a steep hill which may be a bit of a problem for some. But it does make for good views from the property and its outside seating area.
