Smithycroft is a beautiful thatched and stone detached cottage dating back to the 17th century. Fully restored with modern amenities, the cottage still has many of its charming original features including inglenook fireplaces.
Situated in the village of Combe St Nicholas and nestling on the edge of the Blackdown Hills, Smithycroft puts you right at the heart of some of the South West’s most beautiful walking country. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty boasts wonderful, rolling scenery, with walks galore across the Somerset and Devon border.
The traditional thatched cottage feels as cosy as it looks, with an inglenook fire place in the sitting room and a breakfast room with french doors leading out onto the enclosed garden. The owners have refurbished the property to include little touches of luxury, like a roll-top bath in the en-suite from the master bedroom, so you enjoy a traditional cottage with all mod cons too.
Whether you’re coming away for a family holiday or a romantic break, Smithycroft is the ideal base for exploring a fascinating part of the world. The Jurassic Coast and Lyme Regis are thirty minutes’ drive away, and the splendour of Cheddar Gorge is only a short distance too. When you’ve had your fill of walking and exploring, it’s time to come back to your very own country idyll and enjoy all the delights of a tranquil and beautiful hideaway.

Guests with small children should note there are some small steps in the garden and should be supervised.
There are low beams in some areas of the cottage, and a disused well in the garden.
The steps from the parking area are uneven so it is advisable to take any luggage through the front entrance.
Due to the thatched roof, fireworks and barbecues are not permitted at this property.

Smithycroft is a lovely property. The interiors are spacious and very thoughtfully decorated and, of course, the thatched roof is so charming! The beds were also comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you might require to make a meal. The town of Chard is a short drive away and there you can find a Sainsbury's and Tesco. The village of Combe St Nicholas (where the cottage is) has a small shop which has a few essentials including bread and milk should you require. Lyme Regis and Cheddar Gorge were two day trips we did from the cottage - both within an hour's drive. The landscapes in the nearby area (Blackdown Hills AONB) are beautiful - though, we did a walk suggested by the official Blackdown Hills website and it was rather unimpressive (and not well-directed either), so do be careful and maybe ask the property manager or locals for recommendations! As for food, I would recommend the nearby Cotley Inn which had a pleasant atmosphere and good food. There is also La Campagna, a pub which serves Italian food. Would definitely recommend Smithycroft for a stay in the Somerset area!

The cottage was very well equipped. The furnishings were very clean and comfortable. The weather allowed us to use the garden and furniture but we had to clean it well. The cottage was closely situated to the local shop which was handy for the morning newspapers. It was a shame that the TV didn’t allow us to watch Sky Sports namely the Masters Golf in the evenings
