Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet. A fabulous village location with lots of outdoor pursuits to interest every visitor.

On that basis I have given it the highest rating. We had 2 dogs with us and wouldnât recommend it as suitable for dogs in a wet October as the only door into the cottage is immediately off the road onto a light coloured carpet, it was stressful making sure the dogs were clean and dry enough to go back in each time they were taken out, which was every time they needed the toilet due to there being no garden. This is all in the information before you book but I think as itâs offered as suitable for dogs I didnât really think it through. If we wanted to visit without the dogs I wouldnât hesitate in choosing The Old Hatch as everything else about it is faultless.

Lovely linen and comfortable bed. Great position close to village and recreation field great for walking dog. Even able to park our small car outside. Only areas for improvement . TV reception pretty dire as hardly any signal, could only get a couple of channels and WiFi poor ( I know some rural areas have this issue) . Visitor information book scant . Would like to see more info and a bit friendlier for guest ( cooker instructions unhelpful as had to work it out myself. Just seemed unwelcoming and impersonal) Would have been nice to have had a few extra bits in kitchen eg bin bags, foil and a few more utensils ( all found in other Sykes cottages). Overall a lovely cottage just needs a more few welcoming touches. One final point a little mind your head sign on outside door area ( my husband whoâs only 5â8â banged and cut his head several times)

Sadly couldnât complete the guest book as I didnât have a pen with me, but would definitely return.
