Guests are charmed by the unique experience of staying in a well-equipped lighthouse cottage with stunning sea views and tranquil surroundings. The property's cleanliness and the generous welcome hamper are frequently praised, though some guests note a lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal. The location is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat with coastal walks and proximity to Whitby.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The property is generally well-regarded for its cleanliness, with several reviews mentioning it being clean and well-maintained. A few guests noted minor issues such as streaky mirrors and water marks, but these seem to be exceptions rather than the rule.

The location receives high praise for its spectacular views, peacefulness, and proximity to coastal paths and Whitby. The unique experience of staying in a lighthouse is a highlight for many guests.

Guests find the cottage comfortable, with several positive comments about the cosy interior and well-equipped kitchen. However, a few guests mentioned that the property felt smaller than expected and that there was only one toilet.

Facilities are generally rated highly, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the welcome hamper. However, several guests mentioned the lack of Wi-Fi and phone signal, and some minor maintenance issues like a faulty dishwasher and TV reception problems.

The thoughtfulness of the welcome hamper is frequently mentioned and appreciated by guests. It is noted, however, that such gifts, while delightful, are subject to change and not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

In association with Trinity House, we are proud to present Galatea at Whitby Lighthouse.

This attractive cottage on the Whitby Lighthouse site has a sitting room, kitchen/dining room, double bedroom, twin bedroom, single bedroom, bathroom and shower room.

Galatea is one of two holiday cottages available at the lighthouse, which lies on the East Coast just outside Whitby and close to the North Yorkshire Moors. Also on this site is Vanguard, sleeping five guests.

The High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast hide a number of small ports, the most significant of which is Whitby. Captain James Cook was apprenticed to a Whitby shipowner and made the first of his voyages of discovery (1768 to 1771) in a covered Whitby built 'cat' - a small ship rigged collier renamed 'Endeavour'. Whitby's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey, high on Whitby's East Cliff and spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets running down to the busy quayside and harbour entrance. To the south lie the coastal villages and resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Inland lie the heather moorlands of the North Yorkshire Moors and, further afield, York.

Additional Information:

Children and infants welcome. Travel cot and highchair available on request.

Two well-behaved dogs welcome (small additional charge).

There is no WiFi available at Galatea and very limited mobile signal. A landline telephone is provided.

There is an internal step within the property.

Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.

Guests are reminded they are renting a heritage building, therefore certain features such as steps, stairs and floor levels may not comply with that of a modern building. As such, we would advise guests to acquaint themselves with the premises on arrival and exercise caution accordingly.

Access roads to the lighthouse site are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.

A barbecue is not provided, however guests are welcome to bring their own, subject to adhering to the safety precautions set out in the arrival information.

Sorry, no fireworks, drones or remote controlled flying equipment are permitted.

Drivers with low axles should be aware that the site is approached via a farm track.

Sorry, charging of an electric car is not permitted.

The place was perfectly clean and comfortable, earlier reviews about stained carpets and shredded outdoor seat cushions were over stated and Diana (housekeeper) assured me the carpets had recently been shampooed. Bathroom was as pictured and good shower pressure. Well equipped kitchen, double oven which you don't always get and casseroles with lids(!) Location is superb, if there was no chatter from the footpath you could only hear the gulls and the murmur of the sea. However.....lack of wifi is a real problem nowadays. It is so frustrating not to be able to check menus (in busy season restaurants want online booking), post codes, opening hours (e.g. out of date leaflets at house say a garden is open every day, in fact it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays). There is obviously some signal as I heard my phone ping an incoming Whatsapp late at night, so that needs boosting somehow to provide reliable cover. Same goes for mobile signal though Diana assured me this is bad generally in the area. Diana was very helpful and took trouble to give me extra information based on our phone call.
