Rose Lea is a well-loved, cosy cottage praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and homely feel. Nestled in the heart of Staithes, it offers easy access to local attractions, though the steep location may challenge some. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities and thoughtful touches, including provided essentials and biscuits, making for a delightful stay.

Guests consistently note the cottage's cleanliness, with no negative comments on this aspect. The property is maintained to a high standard, ensuring a pleasant environment.

The cottage's proximity to the beach and local amenities is highly valued, although the steep terrain and parking restrictions are noted. Its location is ideal for exploring Staithes and the surrounding areas.

Reviewers find the beds very comfortable and the cottage welcoming. The only minor discomfort mentioned is the steepness of the stairs, which may not suit everyone.

While guests are generally pleased with the facilities, there is a mention of a sticky hairdryer, indicating a potential issue with maintenance. However, there is not enough information to accurately score this category.

The provision of essentials and a welcome treat of biscuits reflects a considerate approach to hospitality. However, it should be noted that such gestures, while appreciated, may vary and are not guaranteed.

About this property

Rose Lea, a character, fisherman’s cottage settled in the heart of the village of Staithes, North Yorkshire. Featuring a homely feel with plenty of character features that date back over 200 years, Rose Lea is a wonderful break for a family of three and their canine companion. Enter into the open-plan living space and immediately sense the cosy feel of the property, featuring an exposed stone fireplace housing an electric fire, along with a TV and a sofa where you ease into the evening after a long day. Prepare home-cooked meals in the kitchen, equipped with all the essentials for a week away, whilst there’s even a washer/dryer so you can easily freshen up your holiday wardrobe! Enjoy a morning coffee from the front patio before heading to the local convenience store and purchasing the ingredients for a hearty breakfast. Find a selection of local inns, charming tea rooms and independent shops in the village, or wander along the harbour or take an invigorating clifftop stroll along the Cleveland Way. Further along the coast, you can visit the historic and atmospheric port town of Whitby, with its cobbled streets, winding alleys and steep steps - all home to a variety of independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Make sure to visit the iconic Whitby Abbey, explore the captivating ruins of the first Augustinian monastery dating back to the 6th century. You are well-placed to explore the vast expanse of the North York Moors National Park, where you can wander through historical heather-clad moors, discover the rolling hills and enjoy some of the best views in the UK. With a stay at Rose Lea, the North Yorkshire coast is yours to explore.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an rnli lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.

Just right for our size of family (2 adults, 1 very big 13yr old). We hadn't realised the steepness of the streets or that vehicle access is so limited, which while not a problem for us could be for others. Oh and the hairdryer in the larger bedroom is really sticky for some reason. All round though we had a great stay and would happily recommend both Rose Lea Cottage in particular and Sykes Cottages.

Rose Lea was clean comfortable & well equipped with lovely Cottage decor I'm sure Rose Lea is loved by its owners and we had a nice break

The cottage itself is welcoming and cosy and is well equipped, including washer drier. The stairs are quite steep so not for those with any mobility issues, and the toilet and shower rooms are separate with the toilet being downstairs. Things to know..yes there is parking but this is at the top of the village and it is metered, and not close to the property. First timers to the village should be aware this is a steep hill to walk up. The information / description about the property differs between agent listings as one said no dogs and parking when in fact yes it can take the family pet dog but parking is restricted to loading and unloading only. We had a wonderful time and would go again!
