Gate Lodge is a charming cottage set in the beautiful Harburn Estate, offering a peaceful retreat with nature walks and easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Guests appreciate the clean, well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and the cosy atmosphere enhanced by a log burner. The cottage is ideal for small families or groups, with some finding it snug for larger parties. The occasional train nearby is barely noticeable, and the thoughtful touches like welcome gifts add to the pleasant experience.
The majority of guests found the cottage to be clean and well-presented upon arrival. However, a few noted areas that could benefit from deeper cleaning, such as under beds and in drawers, and some instances of pet hair. Overall, the cleanliness is highly regarded.
The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity within the Harburn Estate, with easy access to shopping, dining, and attractions in nearby Livingston, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. The proximity to nature and wildlife is a highlight, although the nearby train line is noted by some.
Guests find the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, especially with the log fire. However, the living space is considered tight for larger groups, and seating is limited. Some guests mentioned issues with mattresses and squeaky beds in one of the rooms.
The cottage is well-equipped with a smart TV, kitchen amenities, and a log burner. Some guests mentioned a lack of storage space, minor maintenance issues, and the need for more comprehensive local information. The garden's condition and the absence of a secure fence were also noted.
Guests frequently mention the thoughtful welcome gifts, which add to the charm of the cottage. However, it should be noted that such gifts are a kind gesture and may not be a consistent offering for all stays.

Great facilities and very comfortable. Can barely hear the occasional train so not an issue at all. Close to amenities yet very quiet.

The beds were lovely. As previous guests have said the cottage is compact and though there are bedrooms for 6 the space isn't really big enough for 6 adults. For example the kitchen is small and there is no cupboard space to store food. It would have been nice to have maps/guides/local information in the house, there was nothing like that at all so make sure to bring your own books, games etc. There was an issue with the wifi not working for part of our stay (apparently an issue in the area) and the 4G signal not good inside so be aware if that is important to you.

The little touches like soaps, treats, blankets & throws were lovely. Having hair dryers (although we didn't know about them) was great. Would have been helpful to know that there's no wardrobe storage in 2 of the bedrooms...we did over come this by using the clothes airer as something to hang clothes on. Having plenty of logs was great. Only thing that may be beneficial is to have a curtain to draw across front door as there was abit of a draft as no internal doors for the lounge/kitchen area. Location was great for exploring. Welcome book needs updating as day bins are collected is wrong & WiFi password is incorrect (use the one on the BT hub). The grounds are gorgeous & would highly recommend the cottage.
