Scalegill House is consistently praised for its spaciousness, comfort, and stunning location. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities, secure garden for pets, and the property's cleanliness. The owner's hospitality is frequently mentioned, enhancing the stay. Some guests noted minor issues but overall experiences were overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.
The majority of guests found the property to be very clean and well-maintained. There was, however, a single mention of cleaning issues which seems to be an isolated incident, not reflective of the general guest experience.
The location is highly praised for its peacefulness, beautiful views, and proximity to local attractions. It is described as an ideal setting for exploring the Northern Lakes, contributing to its high score.
Guests frequently mention the comfort of the property, noting the quality of the beds, the spaciousness, and the cosy atmosphere created by features like the wood burner. A few guests mentioned the beds being hard, but these comments were few.
Facilities are generally regarded as excellent, with a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable living spaces. Some guests suggested improvements such as the addition of a shower over the bath and Wi-Fi, which affected the score slightly.
The owner's thoughtfulness is evident through gestures like having the wood burner lit upon arrival and providing Prosecco and milk. While these gifts are greatly appreciated, it's important to note that such personal touches, though common, are not guaranteed.
Scalegill House, found on a private farm track, close to Lake Bassenthwaite, is a traditional Lakeland longhouse with incredible history. As with all traditional longhouses, it’s built in a north south direction, allowing for the sun all day and some incredible sunsets in the evening. The property has been thoughtfully re-developed and has been completely rebuilt from the ground up, the space had been very well utilised and offers excellent social space for friends and families.
The kitchen has a lovely country feel and is superbly fitted out, along with a large family dining table to seat the whole household under Velux windows letting the light flood in. Enjoy the luxurious lounge for relaxing in front of an enormous log burner and smart TV. There’s also a lovely conservatory / sunroom to enjoy a morning coffee or a sundowner. Outside there is plenty of space for children to play with a large lawned garden and a spacious gravel patio with outdoor furniture.
The remnants of Roman forts can be found on the surrounding hills and with views to Skiddaw it is well positioned for exploring right from the door. Keswick, Cockermouth and Carlisle are all within 15 miles and several great pubs are only a short drive away including the Castle Inn which has an excellent reputation for great food. The area benefits from being quieter and less commercialised than some of the other Lakeland towns and villages yet is only a short drive to the popular market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth.
You may well see the ospreys soaring high above Bassenthwaite or see red squirrels in the area. Why not enjoy a visit to the Lakes Distillery, explore the networks of paths that criss-cross the area, choose from the superb local country pubs and relax and unwind in the one of the most peaceful corners of the Lake District. For those wanting the high fells, the summits of Blencathra and Skiddaw are within easy reach and the nearby Whinlatter Forest is the popular destination of choice for those looking for some of the best mountain bike trails in the country.
The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.

The enclosed garden was fantastic for the dogs. So much room for 3 couples and 2 dogs and the well equipped utility room was great for boots & walking gear. Wasnât an implement in the kitchen that hadnât been thought of and provided. John, the owner, was lovely, very interesting and helpful when the power tripped out. Photos donât do this house justice ~ just a lovely place. I do hope we get to come back.
Paula
We enjoyed a lovely family holiday and our two dogs were able to come along too. The beds were super comfy giving us a great nights sleep. A bit of a rarity in holiday homes. The house was spacious and clean with a lovely dog proof garden. First rate.

Thereâs lots of space and everything is finished to the highest spec. It doesnât look particularly attractive from the outside, being a very old farmhouse, but inside is beautiful. I wouldnât recommend for anyone who is disabled or has difficulty walking as it is situated down a long farm track, but the views are lovely and the owners very welcoming. A very special place
