A short drive away, Appleby-in-Westmorland (6 miles) is an ancient Cumbrian market town at the heart of the Eden Valley. The River Eden gently tumbles through this picturesque town and a castle is a splendid spot offering tours and regular events. An easy-going walk takes you from the town centre to the enticing waterfall, Rutter Force (8 miles). If you prefer to see the beautiful surrounding scenery from the comfort of a train, board the famed Settle to Carlisle route from Appleby, heading in the direction of Settle to cross the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct.
