Set in a peaceful estate just a ten-minute walk from the beach at Readymoney Cove, and 15 minutes from the heart of Fowey with a great choice of pubs and shops, The Shippen is the perfect Cornwall country cottage. It sleeps four people in two bedrooms and is stylishly decorated to be both comfortable and relaxing. The South West Coast Path runs nearby, and there are a wealth of beautiful beaches and coves to explore.
The Shippen is the stuff of which dream holidays are made. Skillfully converted from a tradition barn, the holiday cottage sits in two and a half acres on the Lawhyre estate. It is an easy 10-minute stroll through glorious Cornish countryside to Readymoney Cove, and only half a mile from the centre of Fowey with a great choice of bistros and pubs like the 16th Century Ship Inn, which has been serving guests since 1570. With a double and a twin bedroom, and a double sofa bed, the cottage is perfect for couples, families or friends who appreciate a high standard of self-catering accommodation.
Its stunning landscape, gorgeous beaches and fantastic food makes Cornwall a popular holiday destination at any time of year. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Fowey (pronounced “Foy”) has avoided falling into commercialised tourist trappings, showing visitors the authentic side of a traditional way of life. As well as having a regular ferry service to Polruan and Bodinnick, the natural harbour is a favourite with sailors, and the annual Fowey Regatta is an unforgettable experience. The town has an excellent selection of shops, galleries, pubs and cafes, an aquarium and a museum.
If like most people, you are visiting Cornwall for the coast and countryside, you will not be disappointed by your holiday in Fowey. Readymoney Cove is a sheltered sandy beach between Fowey’s harbour and St Catherine’s Castle which is popular with families. There are also lots of other lovely beaches within a short drive or walk along the South West Coastal Path. Polkerris is two miles west of The Shippen, and as easy to walk or cycle as it is to drive. Beautiful Lantic Bay is also close by, as are Lantivet Bay, Polridmouth Cove and Lansallos Cove (which has a small waterfall).
The area has its fair share of attractions for those who can tear themselves away from the beauty of the Fowey Estuary. Visit the world famous Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Helligan, the beautifully preserved port of Charlestown or take the ferry from Fowey and spend the day at Mevagissey. You can also hire a kayak for a fun day exploring the Fowey Estuary under paddle power or simply stay put and enjoy the gardens of Lawhyre and the country lanes around the estate which provide a welcome relief from city noise and suburban grime.
Walking is the perfect way to enjoy Cornwall. Why sit behind a tractor on the country lanes when you could be striding along the acclaimed South West Coast Path? The National Trust manages great stretches of this part of Cornwall’s coast, and have mapped out several wonderful walks designed to make the most of the beautiful views. A good one to try is Hall Walk, or you may prefer walking via Gribbin Head to Polkerris for lunch at Sams on the beach, or even from Polruan to Polperro (a strenuous days walking!).
The Shippen is perfect if you want to make the most of every moment of your holiday from the moment you awake with breakfast on the terrace overlooking the fields, to days full of excitement and fun; and relaxing evenings spent reading, chatting or watching television in front of the flame-effect fireplace.
,The Shippen is mainly all on one level with just a few small steps to navigate between living areas and bedrooms. It is a period property, having been converted from a barn, and has thick walls and exposed beams. There are several other holiday properties on the estate which, depending on availability, can be rented together to provide accommodation for larger groups. However, The Shippen is secluded with a private garden and patio area.
