Guests appreciate the peaceful setting, the proximity to Salcombe, and the well-equipped kitchen. The garden and social spaces are highlights, contributing to a delightful stay.

Cleanliness received mixed reviews. While some guests found the cottage immaculate, others noted issues with dust, cobwebs, and general cleaning. The inconsistency suggests room for improvement.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity and proximity to Salcombe, with beautiful walks and views. The steep walk to town may challenge some, but overall, the setting is considered wonderful.

Guests find the beds and bedding extremely comfortable, contributing to a restful experience. Some furniture could be more comfortable for longer stays, but the overall comfort level is high.

Facilities are generally good, with a well-equipped kitchen and social spaces. However, the cooker and some maintenance issues, such as wobbly banisters and leaky ceilings, have been points of contention.

There is no mention of gifts or special touches that could be categorised as 'thoughtfulness' in the reviews provided, hence the score cannot be determined.

About this property

This pretty 16th century stone cottage is situated in the idyllic hamlet of Baston, just 15-minute walk from Salcombe.

Summer Cottage has been lovingly refurbished in recent years to create a stylish, characterful holiday home offering wonderful countryside views.

The cottage is ideal for a family looking to explore the South Hams, widely regarded to be one of the most beautiful parts of Devon.

Step inside to find Summer Cottage’s cosy living area with delightful traditional features including supporting beams and oak flooring. The calming, neutral décor will help you to relax into your holiday as you curl up in front the roaring wood-burning stove.

The shaker-style kitchen and dining area is spacious with plenty of room for the whole family to gather for meals. The Watson range cooker will see you cooking up a storm. No need to worry about the dishes afterwards – just pop them in the dishwasher.

The ground floor shower room and WC is great for that little bit of extra space.

On the first floor, the master bedroom is striking with exposed stone walls and its own en-suite. The rest of the party can choose from equally charming bedrooms to snuggle up in with a double bedroom, a child’s twin bedroom and a fourth bedroom with children’s bunk beds.

As well as the en-suite, there is also a family bathroom upstairs with a bath and shower overhead.

To the side of the cottage, there is a large terrace area with outdoor seating. Perfect for enjoying a cup of tea in the morning as the sun comes up!

Outside, you’ll also find a separate studio with a TV, comfy sofa and table football – an ideal escape for children.

Salcombe’s many shops and restaurants are all within easy reach. While you’re here, make sure you try fresh Salcombe crab at one of the town’s many wonderful seafood restaurants.

There are two lovely beaches within a short distance and for the more adventurous, you can try your hand at activities such as surfing or kayaking.

This pretty cottage is the perfect home away from home.

Salcombe is a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, walkers and families looking for a holiday by the sea. There are several pretty beaches within a short distance, including North Sands and South Sands, plus the coves East Portlemouth on the opposite side of the estuary, just a short passenger ferry ride away. Also on your doorstep is the National Trust property Overbeck’s where you can wander through the subtropical gardens. Why not have a more adventurous day and try out the watersports available on the estuary including surfing, coasteering, kayaking or a more leisurely boat trip? Whilst staying in Salcombe, take advantage of the locally sourced seafood which is served in many of the restaurants, pubs, cafés and delicatessens. The garden was amazing and safe for young children to run around. The games room was an added bonus. The 15 minute walk into Salcombe is ok and is downhill but a steep walk back so might not be ideal for everyone, driving is possible however the lanes are very narrow and reversing is needed at times. The log burner in the lounge is a lovely touch but the sofas are not very comfortable, due to our stay being a summer month this did not really bother us this time. We did have an issue with lights and had to call an electrician out, we had to wait until the following morning so were without lighting for an evening. Parking is sufficient for 2 cars. Signage for the cottage could be improved so is more easily visible. The shed door is hanging off and we had a near miss when opening it. Wifi is good. I would recommend this cottage for a family stay.
