It features a delightful sitting room with stylish furnishings, a feature fireplace with cosy woodburning stove, and the lovely nooks and crannies associated with a cottage of its grand old age. The rear boasts a modern kitchen with a beautiful kitchen/diner, complete with a wonderful bright and cheery feel from the inventive use of Velux windows and patio doors. This is a wonderful cottage to return home to after a day out on the local fells, so why not prepare a tasty evening meal and retire to the lovely patio to relax and discuss the day’s events? Lovely walks from the doorstep into the surrounding Swale Valley, and close proximity to a wonderful atmospheric pub, owned by the village co-operative, and a traditional village shop, all enhance the experience of a stay in this delightful cottage. This is a superb base for exploring nearby Swaledale, the National Park, York Minster and the North York Moors, making this cottage an ideal location, whatever the time of year.

Hudswell is a small village located just two miles the town of Richmond in Swaledale. Set in rolling countryside, the village boasts a high street with old houses lining the route, and a local pub, the George and Dragon. Like many village pubs, it recently fell on difficult times, so the villagers clubbed together and now run it as a 'Community Pub Initiative'. The market town of Richmond stands to the north of the River Swale. The town grew up around its castle and today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed by the castle or alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls. Narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers' market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy.

Vicky then let us into the cottage and showed us around what was a well layed out cottage very clean and tidy, the kitchen had everything we needed for our stay. The welcome pack included milk and butter in the fridge, coffee, biscuits hot chocolate etc. and fresh home made scones with jam and clotted cream, which were extremely tasty. Vicky provided dog towels and a couple of blankets as we took our Shihtzu with us. We enjoyed our stay at the Blacksmiths cottage, would definitely recommend the cottage for anyone who wants a relaxing break, Vicky was very friendly and told us if we needed anything or if we were unsure about how things worked in the cottage just to pop over and ask. She told us that the pub, The George and Dragon, a two minute walk away, only did snacks during the week and meals on the weekend. We decided to go on the Monday afternoon for a snack and a pint. I ordered a steak and ale pie while my wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which were by no means snack size. The pub has awards from camra for best pub in Yorkshire, very friendly and lots of dogs. All in all we enjoyed our stay at the Blacksmiths cottage, unfortuanately, the only bad thing was the weather, we did get out on the Tuesday, but the Monday and Wednesday were a washout, as usual the sun came out for the trip home.
