What our customers say about their holidays
Holger - Verified booking
It was the worst holiday we have ever had in the 50 years we have been renting holiday homes in England.
Not a day went by without being confronted with issues. On our arrival at first glance we quite liked the cottage and also the welcome pack. But this soon changed when we ran into one problem after the other starting with the exit door in the conservatory which couldn't be opened, the heating which didn't come on by itself because the thermostat was faulty, it took 12 days and the installation of two new thermostats and four visists by an engineer to sort out the heating problem and even then it didn't come on automatically and we had to operate it manually. The service engineer didn't even tell us how to operate this new Thermostat. When we wanted to cook a meal it turned out that all pots and pans were really dirty, the cooking range was greasy and like the extractor hood filters, full of old fat. When we put the oven on at 200 degrees it started to smoke badly and the kitchen was suddenly full of smoke which set the alarm off. A frightening and potentially dangerous experience as we could hardly breathe. We managed to switch the oven off, opened all windows and after a while were able to check what the cause for this had been. We noticed a large amount of old fat on the bottom of the oven which must have started to burn after the cooker was switched on. This old fat must have been in there for a very long time. There were other safety issues with the gas hob and water coming through the patio door. Last but not least the sofas in the sitting room were really dirty. This place needs a lot of TLC. This cottage was in an unsafe condition on our arrival and should never have been rented out to us without a thorough safety inspection beforehand especially with regard to the whole cooking range, the heating system and the leaking patio door. We had so many issues with this house that we thought that the 200 pound discount the owner had offered us wasn't in the least adequate for two weeks ruined holidays. When we threatened to take this matter to the Small Case Court the owner eventually increased his offer to 300 pounds which we finally accepted as we wanted to put this very unpleasant matter behind us. It is worth mentioning that neither Sykes nor the owner have apologized to us for this.

We found the house to be very spacious, lovely and clean and everything you could possibly need is provided.
The welcome pack was very much appreciated and a really nice touch. Itâs a lovely quiet area and has a relaxing feel. The beds are extremely comfortable. Nice spacious bedrooms with wonderful views. The whole house is decorated very nicely and the conservatory is a lovely space to relax. We cooked a few times and found the oven easy to use and everything in good, clean working order. Nice big fridge/freezer. The kitchen has an abundance of space and even has things like cooking oil, spices, coffee, tea, sugar etc which was very helpful. We put the heating on just once and everything worked perfectly. Thereâs lots of places close by to visit and the town is walking distance. A very nice house. We did find the sofa in the lounge quite uncomfortable. Thereâs no head support unless you have lots of cushions propped up. The TV is also quite small. We would watch TV/films in the evening but it wasnât quite as good on a small screen. The garden, unfortunately was a big letdown for usâ¦.We had a small terrier dog with us and on the first day, he walked easily straight through the garden railings into the weeds on the other side. Obviously a dog isnât to know that thereâs a sheer drop over the cliff. Thankfully he came back, but it was a gut wrenching experience that happened twice. We had to find anything we could to block the bottom half of the whole garden fence, using an old table, fold up chairs, logs etc, but there were still big gaps, so every time we were in the garden which was almost every day due to the nice weather, one of us had to keep watch. We couldnât leave him unattended and relax. Most of the patio paving also needs attention. If the bottom half of the whole garden fence had some chicken wire running along it, then it would have been a perfectly lovely holiday and I would more than happily return. If you havenât got a small dog with you, then this would be a non issue and I would definitely without a doubt recommend this lovely house to anyone else.

It was a last minute booking after a recent family bereavement, so generally, we were happy with the booking.
However, there were a number of things we felt were in desperate need of modernisation. First of all, the bathrooms. The showers were particularly bad, the one in the bathroom upstairs didn't even attach to the wall, and there was no mirror above the sink so it was impossible to shave. There was a mirror above the sink in the wet room downstairs but the light wasn't working! The bedroom with the twin beds in (where we put our children) was particularly cold, and when the heating came on, the boiler in the room beneath them was so loud it woke them up at 5am for three days straight! I do understand that upgrading the boiler isn't cheap, but it was the noisiest I've ever heard and could easily be replaced with a much quieter one. All the pipes throughout the house banged loudly when the heating came on. Some urgent plumbing work is required. The TV was tiny and could be updated, there was no option to use catch-up or apps etc, something the owners could easily rectify. But I think the thing which really was unforgivable was that there were huge dog poos everywhere inside the grounds. Why these hadn't been picked up I really don't understand. I think it's obvious that this property is managed by a large agency who are clearly based several hundred miles away, and don't get to inspect it on a regular basis. I couldn't recommend staying here to anyone until some major refurb and clean up work is undertaken

This is a lovely property with lots of room and plenty of equipment for cooking which was useful as we were a family group at Christmas and New Year.
Decorations were up and there was a decorated Christmas tree. It's in the country on an estate where we could take the dog for walks. The owner was very helpful about us adding on an extra day at either end of the holiday when we could see on the Sykes website that the property was free. Some minor problems: We did ask for the bed in the downstairs bedroom to be made up as two twins (as my husband snores). The bed was listed on the website as super king size but actually it was only king so the twin beds were narrow and not very comfortable. When some of the family left I slept in one of the other rooms where the bed was more comfortable. There was a minor power cut part way through the holiday and the owner helpfully came out twice to try and sort out the timing on the heat pump that provided the heating but it didn't work consistently for the rest of the holiday. However there was a log burning stove in the lounge that we could have used if it had been colder. There was a pump in a cupboard in one of the upstairs bedrooms (the one with the en suite) and even before the power cut it would come on in the middle of the night making a banging noise every couple of seconds and kept my daughter awake. Some of us used the undercover outdoor pool once but maybe to be expected at this time of year despite being heated it wasn't warm enough to be comfortable.

Where to start?
a. Safety must be the first concern, especially in case of fire in such a wooden building. However, when you lock the main door at night, from the inside, it is virtually impossible to unlock. To do so we had to climb through a window every morning, to unlock the door from the outside. This is a known problem as there is a note on the door frame. REPLACE THE LOCK as a matter of urgency. b. Most of the smoke alarms have been removed. c. The kitchen induction hob's glass top is badly broken, with bits detaching. Yes it still works, but really.. d. The sink in one of the upstairs bathrooms has a big (~2") hole in it and is unusable. e. The tv in the downstairs bedroom has no signal. This was reported on day 2, and nothing done. f. Broken glass by the swimming pool. g. The outside "key safe" is upside down, and does not appear to work in any case. h. Most bedrooms very basic/small with picture hooks but no pictures on the walls. The pictures are very flattering. We paid £1800 for a week and expected more, having done this many times elsewhere. i.e. we are not that hard to please. The above is a pity as the property could be reasonable if furnished to a better standard, and is further let down by poor maintenance. We reported the sink and hobb on arrival the first day and were offered a £50 (!) discount. It has not appeared as yet..
