What our customers say about their holidays
Amanda - Verified booking
We booked Pen-y-bryn for our 2 week honeymoon.
It didn't disapoint! On arrival our cottage was open for us to get into. The cottage was clean, comfortable and very well equipped. There was a welcome pack of ground coffee with a cafetiere, a trio of jams/chutney and some tea, coffee, sugar. Under the sink was a cleaning kit that also included a few dishwasher tablets. There was also a hoover, tea towels, oven gloves, bin bags, recycling bags and food waste bags. There were clear instructions regarding waste and recycling. The bed is VERY comfortable and the shower room is bliss! The towels provided were a really good quality and size, not postage stamp sized like other cottages we have stayed in! Jamie and Claire came and personally greeted us and ran through some 'housekeeping' such as hot tub operation, swimming pool, games room, recycling, and fire pit. They also gave us some amazing restaurant recommendations and places to visit. Jamie, Claire and their children are all lovely and very approachable. It is worth having a read through the guest book and noting where others recommend too. The whole complex was immaculately maintained, and the trades people we encountered were all friendly and approachable. We had a boiler issue which they sorted very swiftly. There are so many things to see and do within an hours drive of Canllefaes. The location of Canllefaes is very peaceful and waking up to hear the birds is simply bliss. There is a petrol station at the top of the drive that sells a small selection of groceries. There is a Tesco, Aldi and B&M approximately 7 min drive from the complex. We have made SO many happy memories and are already looking to book for next year.

The general cleanliness was not good.
We had to wash cooking utensils before using them, there was also bits of hair and dirt in the drawer of the kitchen units. The cullender had green stuff on the bottom of it, so whoever had previously been there had not washed up properly and there's even a dishwasher. So there's really no reason for it not to be clean. The microwave was also in a filthy state with bits of food splattered inside it. There were cobwebs by the fire extinguisher and down the back of one of the bedside cabinets. Additionally, the walkway down to the property is very treacherous, particularly after it's rained, it was rather slippy and one of the steps appears to have broken in two and when I stepped on it, part of it slid from under my foot because of the wet soil/muddy texture underneath and I almost lost my footing. This needs to be rectified, it's only a matter of time before someone does fall, particularly if it's wet. The final thing is that we could not see anywhere to put, or any instructions where to put, our rubbish, nor the dog's poo bags. Consequently, we ended up leaving our rubbish in black bags inside the doorway and I had to leave the dog poo bagged up outside, with the little bags all bagged up in a bigger bag. This is not what we would normally do on a holiday, but we could not find anything in the information folder in regard to this. If it is in there, it needs to be made clearer. Or place suitable bins by the cottage for this. We took photos of the above problems (microwave, drawer, cullender, walkway.etc) should you need to see them.

This is a perfect place for a relaxing break in beautiful countryside.
Each of the two cottages has its own small, enclosed garden, but beyond that there are are lovely gardens planted with interesting shrubs and trees and two adjacent fields. There's plenty of space to sit outside and listen to the birds, and it's perfect territory for a dog to roam. Penny and Digby and their two dogs couldn't have been more welcoming. They gave us useful advice on places to visit, and were very quick to sort out a minor problem in our cottage. The welcome basket was a very nice touch, and our dog enjoyed the special treats provided! Upstairs there's a large and bright bedroom, and the bathroom. Downstairs the sitting room and kitchen are quite small and a little dark, but very comfy--fine if you keep things tidy! Everything was very clean and fresh. The bird-feeder outside the window attracts a wide range of birds--and squirrels! Wifi was fine, but turning it off and then on again is occasionally necessary to boost the signal. The Post Office/shop at the bridge, about 5 minutes' drive away (25 minutes' walk) has started offering very good coffee and home-made cakes--highly recommended!

The area is very pretty and peaceful and the cottage well equipped and had far too many towels for just 2 people for 1 week stay.
The owner provided treats for both dog and humans such as wine milk tea coffee sugar sweets logs but whilst these were very nice , I would have preferred kindling, matches and paper and a clean ready to use wood burner., a properly working shower ( it was just a trickle, extractor in bathroom wasnât working either). Toilet was slightly blocked on our arrival (something an owner should have checked during cleaning ( if that had been done properly). I sorted it myself quickly enough. Bed linen whilst clean was not the correct size for the bed size. Window blinds missing in the bedroom. Sofa and lounge floor covered in white dog hairs. Owners dog had left a âwelcome giftâ of their own on path down to cottage (owner did clean this away quickly but more appeared during our stay.) The outside area was very over grown , long grass and weeds. I would not return to this cottage which falls far short of the usual standard I expect from a Sykes cottage. Such a shame as with just a little bit more effort on part of the owner regarding maintenance, it would be a good cottage.

The cottage itself was lovely, can't fault it.
It's a lovely little place. Would definitly like to go back in the summer when the weather is kinder to enjoy a bbq outside and sit on the nice decking area. We wanted a nice quiet area to stay and this is definitly that. With a decent shop about 3 miles away that is very reasonably priced. My only downside is, and this is nothing to do with the property. Most places/attractions are a 40 min plus drive away i.e Tenby, Pembrokeshire. Some attractions are nearer but it all depends what you want to see or do. It is very nice at night, all peaceful, and thats what we wanted. I suppose it's hard to find the balance of nice and quite but near all the big places too. But a lovely place over all and a nice bottle of wine and logs provided. Always wanted to try a log fire.....wasn't disappointed.
