What our customers say about their holidays
Louise - Verified booking
Every summer in the last seven or eight years we have stayed in Cornish Cottages holiday lets in Mullion.
We book again and again because of the high standard of the properties which, we assume, you at Sykes also inspect regularly to ensure your high standards are maintained. We have always really enjoyed staying in CC properties. This year, however, we stayed in Pencoys, Glenmoor Lane via Sykes. Individually the issues below are not particularly worthy of comment but, taken together, are indicative of a neglected, poorly maintained property. The property is in a less than satisfactory state. ⢠None of white goods were adequate â the casters on the dishwasher trays and during our stay the dishwasher stopped working altogether; two of the hobs on cooker were not working; the fridge light was not working and the fridge is clearly near the end of its life; the washing machine needs servicing â it did not washing clothes very well; ⢠There had been amateur efforts to cover up the mould on the bathroom walls, ceiling and window blind. There has been no effort to deal with the big patches of mould in the living room (above the French windows) ⢠The decoration hasnât been refreshed in many years ⢠The kitchen window needs replacing as the double glazing seal is broken and you canât see through portions as it is obscured by water. The DG seal on the twin bedroom window has also broken ⢠The soft furnishings in the living room are past it - especially the armchair where the cover is in a particularly poor state ⢠Battery needs replaced in kitchen clock - clearly not been working for some time ⢠Several of the gutters are blocked by large bit of turf! ⢠There were virtually no clothes pegs and those that remain broke as we tried to use them as the plastic was so old â and the rotary dryer doesnât turn because of it overgrown with vegetation ⢠Several of the plates, bowls and glasses were chipped and the crockery was so old it looked like it had come from a charity shop ⢠The chopping board was dirty and stained â it needs replacing ⢠The sun shade with the table on the back patio not secured so it is unusable ⢠The dining table mats are sticky â not clear of this was from age or poor cleaning The housekeeping is carried out by neighbours who are clearly not able to provide a professional service: ⢠Some of the towels were musty, smelt unpleasant (the neighbours do the washing, not a professional service as set out in the information provided at the cottage) ⢠Although we had booked two weeks there were no toilet cleaning or other cleaning materials â especially poor for a summer let (we have never stayed in a let where no cleaning materials were provided) ⢠There were no replacement kitchen bin liners ⢠There was no hand soap of any kind - not helpful on arrival ⢠There were bit of food in the cutlery draw and a couple of the plates in the cupboard were encrusted with food ⢠The vacuum cleaner is in desperate need of a service â does not work well and leaves a smell of dog! ⢠In other CC properties there is always a welcome of a cream tea/hand-made biscuits/bottle of wine. Here there were just a couple of packets of Tescoâs own brand biscuits â frankly, better not to bother The owner, it seems, is happy to take our money but unwilling (or unable) to maintain the property to an acceptable standard. The property did not represent value for money and we think we are due a refund of some of the cost â 25% seems fair recompense. When we raised these issues with the housekeepers/neighbours there was little they could do (we did get replacement towels on our last day, they provided some cleaning materials and, apparently, the white goods are being replaced as a result of our comments). They spoke with the owner who asked us to get in touch via you, as our agent, to discuss further.

The property was in a beautiful location and just a short walk to the beach and harbour.
It's a very large property which can easily accommodate a large family/group of friends. On initial inspection the property looked very clean and maintained. However, closer inspection showed a few areas that needed addressing. 1. There are many marks/dents/scratches around the property. We did video these to provide proof that they were there before we arrived. 2. The living room carpet doesn't meet at the edge and is all frayed - be careful when stepping out the door so you don't catch your foot in it. 3. The living room windows in particular are so smeared that they are difficult to see through when the sun shines on them. 4. Went to use the bath only to have dirty brown water gushing up through the plughole - would not use after that. 5. The larger ensuite bedroom has a foul smell coming from the shower drain - did not want to investigate. 6. In the same bedroom, not noticed until we stripped the bedding to leave, the duvet cover that was tucked in at the bottom of the bed had blood on it. Absolutely awful. Wish I had known this before the bed was slept in. Randomly at 1.30am the entire household was woken up by the doorbell ringing - quite concerning as nobody there on inspection. The details on checking out etc need to be updated in the guest book. The playroom adjoining the living room would be great as a bedroom for a disabled person as they wouldn't be able to access the bedrooms downstairs. The WiFi needs an extender for downstairs as the WiFi doesn't reach the bedrooms. These may seem like minor issues to some but cleanliness is very important to me - I like to feel that a property has been well cared for. This house felt a bit unloved. There is a cut through to the side of the house which leads into the village so you don't have to walk on the road which is great. Just be careful as the stones are quite slippy when wet.

A beautiful cottage set in an amazing location to visit the South of Cornwall.
Did find it slightly difficult to find initially and there is really only parking for two cars. The property was clean and tidy and had comfortable beds and sofas, a washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher. There is a TV downstairs and one in each of the bedrooms, and plenty of storage place. The utility room has a toilet and shower with plenty of room for coats/ shoes etc, and to dry the dog.(crate/blankets and bowls supplied). The kitchen had most things you'd need for a short stay (Although the tin opener was useless) the new Esse cooker was simple to use and there is also a combi microwave. We did find some mould on a ceramic baking dish. It would've been nice to have had salt, pepper (basics) and tin foil/cling film and kitchen towel. The garden is great, so many hidden areas to it with fruit trees and some herbs. There are three sitting areas, a bench/table near the house, a small table/chairs near the lawn and a bigger terrace with a corner garden sofa and loungers. It would've been nice to have a broom/brush and dustpan, cloth/kitchen cleaner and more toilet rolls. I also couldn't see how to recycle bottles/cans/plastics and kitchen waste. Because the rubbish bin was in front of the neighbours most of the week, it wasn't clear it was Clahar's, and had a couple of black bags ripped open. We did loose hot water one day, but after a phone call it was promptly resolved within about an hour. The shower in the bedroom does leak quite a bit from the outlet which passes through the wall to the hose (Although it did not affect the use of the shower). Other visitors said they had a bottle of fizz and a doggy biscuit, that would've been lovely, although we were left bread, butter, milk, tea and coffee, a nice surprise. These were minor, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Short answer: fabulous place which provided an excellent backdrop to the best half term holiday I've had.
100% recommend. Longer answer: beautiful farmhouse, tastefully decorated, with plenty of shared space and good sized rooms for the whole family. So much thought went into making it comfortable and feeling like a treat. It is somehow both incredibly family and dog-friendly as well as romantic and pampering. Travel cot provided. Dog beds and blankets and even treats! The kitchen is the best stocked holiday kitchen I've seen. Enough space to prepare and eat meals. A separate utility area was large and very useful. The views from the garden are brilliant. Enjoying the evening sun in the large garden and watching the sun set was a highlight. There is a little playhouse with a slide, and at night the fairy lights come on, making it seem magical to the children. There is a separate, enclosed outside space for hanging washing, rinsing wetsuits etc. Ample parking - 5 cars easily parked on the driveway. Jo was so accommodating and helpful. She invited us to visit the working farm, which was as much a treat for the children as for the adults. Her knowledge and care for the animals was impressive. This was the best farm visit I've ever had - another highlight of the week. Plentiful information about the local area was available. Jo clearly cared about making our stay a really positive experience, and I would say without hesitation that she succeeded. We loved our stay - thank you!

Clahar Cottage is a stunning cottage in a great location.
The interior has been done is such a tasteful way to maintain the history of the building but also offer modern facilities. The garden is a great haven with plenty of seating dotted around to hide in! We enjoyed many walks both from the cottage or within a short drive and our dogs have just loved it! My only very very very small niggles are the lack of a hoover/good brush and some cleaning products as when you are in and out from walks with dogs the boot room got really mucky and I would like to have left it cleaner. A word of warning if you are tall like my husband - walk around with a stoop as he bashed his head on the back door more than once and the low beam in the kitchen near the kettle. You think heâd have learnt the first time but it seemed to knock all his sense out of him!!!!! The steps to the first floor are also narrow in depth and thus steeper which some may struggle with. However these are just things you have to accept in an old listed building and become conscious of during your stay. I hope to return to Clahar again. It was so nice to be able to be in a rural quiet location but also within walking distance to food shops and pubs which meant we hardly had to drive. I highly recommend you try Clahar for yourself, you wonât regret it!
