  There’s no doubt that Mawgan Porth is one of the most beautiful spots on the north coast of Cornwall.

  Beautiful sunsets, caves, waterfall and rock pools at low tide, not to mention a really safe beach to surf. We absolutely love this destination. Gwillen is in a lovely spot high up overlooking the bay with beautiful views. It has the quaint charm of an old property with modern touches. All linen, and towels were clean and the beds super comfy however a few furnishings let the place down. Hence dropping a star, the attic room for children has no blinds on the windows, my son was awake at 5.30 most mornings as the sun was blaring in and the room became super hot too and that was before the heatwave week! We managed to make shift a drape over one of the windows but it didn’t work that well. The sofas are old and uncomfortable to sit on and the dining chairs are falling apart. Having said all this, coffees in the conservatory and the spacious open plan area made for a nice relaxed feel. The walk to and from the beach is not for the faint hearted, small children or those who have mobility issues. Turn tight out of the apartment and go past the super expensive new builds - you’ll see a track that takes you along the top to the bedruthan steps, the walk to the bay with surf boards and beach bags is doable but tricky to say the least! If going down at high tide you have to walk across the top around the bay before dropping down as the steps will be covered in water. Sykes were amazing with their communications, there was a mix up with our booking (on our side) and as a result, part of our family had to arrive later. We called Sykes a few times to try and negotiate a deal for the extras nights we requested however the owner did not want to free us a cheaper right as they were holding out for ah extra booking. The day before we left I noticed Gwillen was still available for the nights we needed so I called Sykes again and they called the owners straight away but they wanted to hold out for a 4 night booking and we only needed 2, so the price was for 4 nights. We were gutted to say the least as we really wanted to stay those extra 2 nights. All in all it was a wonderfully relaxing holiday and we would highly recommend Gwillen to an active family or group, we had a truly lovely stay.

  We love staying at Bro Tref and stayed last year.

  The location is spot on and the village is lovely. However, this year, the house was not as clean as last year, we found butter in the microwave, and some dog poo on the gravel, ( but no worries as it was disguised and easily done, so we dealt with it). I also understand that allowing dogs is great as we brought two of our furry friends, but the resources to clean the house has gone backwards. The brush was dirty and old and although I tried to keep the floor tidy, the brush was not up to the job. Under the sink is a mess, there is so much clutter and gunge. Under the stairs is a mop bucket and mop which is smelly so adds to the aroma in the living room. The very old Dyson hoover does not work effectively, we tried to use it but the suction is limited and it has seen better days. I remember that last year there was a small henry hoover which did the job well. The upstairs shower is need of some maintenance as it doesn't drain very well. The main double room has a mouldy damp smell, but this is down to a small wooden cupboard and it is the wood which is contributing to this. Not sure how often the windows are cleaned but they were mucky and needed a clean. Outside rear has had an improvement which was good to see. I don't want to be over critical as we will definitely come again but the house needs some general maintenance and the cleaning contract needs to be relooked at especially the contract that is had to clean the place as it was not up to the same standard as last year.

  This is a characterful cottage in an ideal location for exploring the northern beaches of Cornwall, close to Newquay and Padstow, located in a lovely village with a great beach only a 5 minute drive away.

  Nearby airport is not an issue. The cottage is well equipped for any holiday, lovely large open fireplace in lounge, good sized kitchen which is part of an extension, great utility room which would be great for coming back to, after a wet day out, nice use of surfboards to decorate the property along with some nice artwork on the walls, great large dining room table, large wet room downstairs with OK shower (though slow to drain) nice garden space at the front of the property. The house is let down by being tired in places - upstairs bathroom is desperately in need of an update eg. Discoloured toilet seat making you feel uncomfortable and clearly there used to be a shower over bath but is now a hand held shower, red sofa in lounge has clearly seen better days, carpets have a grubby feel, the two fridges both look old eg no door trays in kitchen fridge suggesting they were broken, strange use of wooden boxes in fire place, no welcome guide to tell you what to do with recycling waste or where your nearest GP, vet is etc. Overall this was a good place to explore the beauty of Cornwall in a cottage that grows on you over the week despite it being tired in places and in need of an update.   We had a lovely stay in Sandseekers Barn which is in a brilliant location very close to the coastal path to Bedruthan Steps and a pleasant (albeit steep) walk to the beach at Mawgan Porth. The area is stunning, we didn't want to leave and neither did the dog who enjoyed daily walks on the beach and coastal path. There's a great shop in Mawgan Porth, a couple of cafes and pub/ hotel which more than suited our needs. We didn't venture far the whole week which was just what we wanted although Newquay, Padstow and Wadebridge are not far at all. The barn is set over 3 floors and was really warm, comfortable and well equipped. Everything is modern and tastefully decorated; the beds and bedding were incredibly comfortable and showers fantastic and powerful. Having two seating areas is a real bonus for a multigenerational stay and good wi-fi was much appreciated! The garden was useful for the dog only and could do with a bit of brightening up if it were to be an area to sit outside in. A few personal touches like cushions, welcome pack and local information were missing but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Thank you so much, we loved Sandseekers Barn.

  Brilliant holiday home!

  We could not have asked for somewhere better!!!! We absolutely loved the location… 2 min drive to watergate bay beach, recommend Wax for an easy family meal. Emily Scott food was lovely and view fantastic (but service less than ideal for the standard of restaurant), we didn’t try the Beach Hut as it was fully booked but I take that as a good sign as was Catch Seafood in the village of Mawgan Porth. The holiday home had sea views and we watched the sun gone down most evenings. Everything had been thought of in this house, super dog friendly with extra blankets to protect the comfy sofas from the dogs, a stair gate to keep dogs downstairs etc. Sofas and Beds super comfy, kitchen and bathrooms very modern and clean. Garden was small but perfect for our needs. Wi-Fi, tv and living space perfect for a family of 4! Some reviews talk about the parking… yes it’s a little tight but we managed to park an XC90 everyday with no issue! There is plenty of swing space and as the parking area is off the main road you can easily take your time if you are worried! Thanks so much Heather for a great week!
