Scargill Castle is a unique and charming property that offers a tranquil and historic experience. Guests are consistently impressed by the thoughtful touches, including a generous welcome hamper, and the property's cleanliness. The castle's location is praised for its idyllic rural setting and proximity to local attractions. While the stone spiral staircase and lack of modern conveniences like Wi-Fi are noted, these are part of the authentic castle experience. Overall, the property provides a memorable stay for those seeking a peaceful retreat with a touch of luxury.
Most guests found the property to be impeccably clean and well-maintained, though a few noted issues with dog hair and the need for a deeper clean in some areas. The high standard of cleanliness contributed positively to the overall experience.
The castle's location is highly praised for its beautiful countryside and peacefulness, with easy access to walks and local history. The working farm setting adds to the rural charm, although it was not to everyone's taste.
Guests generally found the castle to be comfortable, with a well-appointed kitchen and cozy atmosphere. The stone spiral staircase and the layout of the toilet were mentioned as potential discomforts, especially for those with mobility issues.
The property's facilities are appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the enclosed garden. However, some guests felt that certain areas were looking tired and that the property could benefit from some updates and maintenance.
The thoughtfulness of the hosts is evident in the welcome hamper and additional touches like fresh flowers and local attraction information. While gifts are warmly received, it is important to note that such offerings may vary and are not guaranteed.
Scargill Castle nestles in the beautiful Teesdale landscape close to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Built in 1560 on the site of an earlier medieval castle, now fully restored from a crumbling ruin into a delightful retreat for two.
Combining historic character with all the cosiness and comfort of the 21st century. Private parking leads through a gate into your own sheltered and enclosed courtyard gardens (perfect for visiting dogs), created from the old Tudor manor house.
From the garden, the arched entrance hall leads into a dining hall with long oak table; take a moment to admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago! From here you can wander into the sunny kitchen which overlooks the Tudor gardens.
The stone spiral stairs lead up to the living room with oak floors and a wood burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. Two deep set windows pierce the ancient thick walls and overlook the Tudor courtyard gardens to the east and the rolling landscape of Teesdale to the west. Further up the spiral staircase is the romantic bedroom with double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs. The rich colours reflect the Tudor love of golds, reds and rich greens which are highlighted with mood lighting enhancing the exposed timber beams above. Windows to east and west provide views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond.
Additional Information:

A lovely restoration, with a great back storey. The castle was comfortable and warm, and there is a toasty log fire with logs supplied. The garden is nice and secure for dogs, but be warned the spiral staircase is steep, it has a handrail but you need to be careful. A great location, and we ordered the medieval banquet, and had other meals prepared and delivered by coghlanscatering, so we did not need to do any food shopping for the weekend. A great location for touring, and the Staffies on Tour had a great time!

The property doesn't offer any comfortable seating downstairs. Poorly laid out room design, huge dining table in a room which would be much better with a beautiful comfortable sofa / chairs. cramped and gloomy sitting room upstairs with only one good chair. Garden was a mess. Claustrophobic with no view unless you stood on a wall. Uncut lawn, out of control weeds, sad looking flower pots, stone piles randomly plonked. Some garden furniture unusable as was literally falling apart, other furniture rusting with no cushions. Did find some cushions in the laundry room but were covered in bird poop and smelled bad. Attached to one side of the garden has a chicken coop, they don't smell so good and are noisy. The other side of the garden has a cow barn attached which also has strong smell. I keep livestock myself so am used to all that entails but I think it should be made much clearer that you will be living in the yard with them Free range goats which were lovely but have a habit of incessantly head butting the glass doors if they can see you. Amusing for 5 minutes thereafter just a nuisance. I think this property is trying to be quirky / romantic but it's not a castle it's not comfortable and leaving a few stones around outside does not constitute a fabulous garden. The food basket was a nice touch. I suppose it depends on what you're used to but we found the property cramped, uncomfortable a bit of an endurance and were glad to leave.
