The location is stunning, if youre looking for tucked away peace and quiet with stunning views of the coast then you won't go wrong. Porlock Weir is beautiful, there is a lovely pub about 10 minutes walk along the quiet lane, definitely bring a torch for the walk back! The cottage itself also has the potential to be stunning but lacks love and attention to detail... Good Points Tea/Coffee, milk, biscuits bread & butter left so you can get a cuppa as soon as you arrive Bag of logs and kindling for fire Sky TV & good strength WiFi Very comfortable king size bed Linens and towels clean Hot water Kitchen well equiped, clean if mismatched jumble of crockery, utensils etc Not so good points This cottage is in desperate need of a deep clean. It is full of cobwebs, dust and dirt. The skirting boards, light switches and window frames are filthy. The sofa and armchair are tired and uncomfortable. Upstairs is lovely and warm, not so downstairs. Its draughty and cold. The storage heater is ill equipped to heat the area, which in the summer would not be so much of a problem but in January when we stayed was! We needed to keep the log burner going the whole time we were there. The bathroom was clean and although there is plentiful hot water the pressure is appalling with little more than a trickle from the shower. The layout in the lounge area is a little depressing with the sofa facing a blank wall and it is generally quite dark in the downstairs area. In the welcome book the owner states (summer 2018) that they have been away and standards have slipped but that they are sorting them out. This was not evident during our stay... Apart from the kitchen, this cottage needs a complete refurbishment a good scrub and some attention to detail. Such a disappointing shame, I would have been really upset if I have paid full price to stay here, and would have complained whilst there. Currently I would not recommend this cottage to friends and family, however if standards improved I would stay again.

Loved walking down the footpath to the pretty harbour. Not suitable for people with walking difficulties! The cottage is set up in the woods about a mile past Porlock Weir, and in idyllic surroundings, a path takes you to the back of the old Hotel. A 5 minutes walk the other way takes you to the toll gate cottage. The house is a good size and everything was provided. Decent knives, pans and plenty of plates cups etc. All good quality. We were left half a loaf, butter and milk, Ideal as we got down pretty late. Nice to have good wifi and Sky tv. The sheets and towels were spotless and the bed very comfortable. Plentiful supply of hot water, although water pressure very poor especially in the shower. Now to the negatives- when guests are paying £50 for cleaning (Airbnb) I would expect the property to be clean ! When check in time is also at 4pm, this gives 3/4 of a day to check for cleanliness. The property was grubby and looked as if this had gathered over a long time. In general, the cottage was tired and grubby and I will feed this back privately in detail. We had a good clean of the surfaces etc, but shouldn’t really have needed to. Overall Location great , nothing that a couple of hours of cleaning couldn’t fix. But ideally it needs a revamp and a lick of paint! A seaside type theme etc would transform it.

Excellent location especially for walkers, and we had a very good time despite rain every day. No noise at night nor bright lights (nb wooden venetian blinds seem quite old so no idea if they would keep out full moonlight). The bed was OK for us. A pretty, separate garden for guests, with a sea view from the seat, which sadly we did not use due to rain. The cottage was generally clean and tidy but, given the age of some fixtures and fittings, we suspect that these are beyond the remit of the hours allowed for changeover cleaning. The shower has a weak flow so anyone with long, thick hair would be better taking a bath and using a saucepan for rinsing. There isn’t much of a view from the downstairs area so more than a day inside during incessant rain (especially during Covid restrictions) may be dispiriting for some. We would thoroughly recommend the cottage for outdoors loving friends/relatives who don’t need to travel huge distances from the other end of the UK. The rest would need more creature comforts.

Fantastic location, right next to some of the most beautiful ancient Atlantic oakwoods in Britain. 20 minute walk up on to the moor. Easy 5 minute walk to the pub and coast. No need to use the car at all. The cottage is well equipped, but if you've got dogs that sneak upstairs while you're asleep then bring your own temporary stair gate. If you want immaculate decoration - as some of the previous guests seemed to want by reading their rather unfair reviews - stay somewhere else. But if you want a really cosy place to stay for a winter weekend in a quiet, beautiful location which has traditional cottage décor and a quirky atmosphere then this is the place for you. Plenty of hot water, shower fine, very clean. We live fairly locally 40 miles away, and have found a place we'll definitely return to. We have found a gem for a good price.

Plenty of hot water, very comfortable bed, all appliances worked well, Wi-Fi adequate for everyday browsing. Location is exceptionally quiet and outstandingly beautiful, backed by woodland, and with a wildlife paradise garden reaching down to a view of the sea and Hurlstone Point, with loungers available in sun or shade. Very little traffic, as it’s at the top end of a small country road ending in a gated entrance to the lower toll road, and the coast path to Culbone. Good local facilities. Footpath to Porlock Weir is an easy ten minutes walk. Friendly owner lives in adjacent, separate property, and is very willing to help and respond to suggestions if needed, without being intrusive.
