What our customers say about their holidays

A great cottage in a beautiful village.
The cottage is well appointed and spacious and really home from home. The owners were fantastic, and nothing too much trouble. Other than a pub, the village does not have a local shop, so ensure you take what you need, or buy essentials when you're out and about as there is nowhere to walk to for a loaf of bread or milk. However, our welcome pack from the owners meant we had plenty in! The lane outside the property is narrow, so if you have a very large vehicle or are a nervous driver, I would advise parking nearby. Other than to load and unload I parked my car on the adjacent road and never had trouble finding space. It was only 300 yards away, so not a big deal for me. It's a great base to explore the local area. The train station at nearby Darlington gets you North to Durham or South to York, so you can travel further afield. We liked the Mainsgill Tea Room on the A66 and Easby Abbey is worth a trip for the echo stone. You can park in Richmond and walk the mile or park in Easby itself. We were lucky enough to have beautiful sunny evenings, so met the neighbours and local dog walkers. It really is a serene part of the world and oh so quiet! Sykes were top notch with regard to email communications sending us information regards the property.

On arrival at the cottage, we discovered it hadn't been cleaned from the previous renter, several days earlier.
It had dirty towels and bedding lying around with a rancid smell. We contact owner via mobile number provided, who firstly said Sykes hadn't sent him the booking, booked in March, followed by why don't we just go home and get a refund from Sykes. Ad we'd travelled with our dog, we thought it better to get this resolved, as travelling again so soon would up set the dog. Within about 40 minutes a lovely lady turned up to clean the cottage, but it was a bigger job than she first expected as the fridge was in a shocking, as was the bathroom and oven. As the cleaner said, she'd visited other cottages on site earlier that day to clean but had never cleaned this one. Nearly 2 hours later we were aeventually able to move our things in, and begin our little relaxing break. The garden is secure for dogs and the site itself is very relaxed and safe to walk around. The cottage needs a good revamp, the wet room needs sorted as black mould on silicon never looks good. Major concern was the smoke alarms didn't work, we know this as we burnt something and they never went off.

The light fitting was hanging off in the bathroom by its cable.
The fridge was not clean and had wet paper inside the icebox where someone had tried to clean it out Also it was turned off on arrival and we had a lot of cold food to put in there also there was no gate on the garden so you couldnât let The dog into the garden and it said enclosed garden on the description the garden was messy and needed maintenance work also the bin lid in the kitchen was broken also there was holes in the walls in one of the bedrooms also kitchen utensils were in poor cleanliness condition also the sofa had food and wrappers down the side of the cushions also was a bit confused with there being a Child seat connected to the toilet when it says in the description adults only no children under 12

Had a fantastic stay at Arklehurst.
Perfect location for us. Lots of lovely walks. Kitchen was a lovely entrance, very spacious and well equipped. However, may I suggest a small welcome basket. For example milk, tea, coffee, biscuits. The shop which is 3 miles does stock all the above and more. But if you arrive late due to the traffic then youâre out of luck. The house was tidy but wouldnât say clean, there were a lot of cobwebs (that had been there a while) dust on the sides and the shower had mould on (which is obviously known about due to the mould spray that is kept in the bathroom). Overall this was a perfect location for a very quiet break. With fantastic walks and The CB Inn a few miles away for a perfect dinner experience.

Very lovely cottage, downstairs a little smaller than appears on the photos.
Very well presented, a few bits of equipment missing (like large pan - we bought one) that you tend to find in cottages being rented for the first time, but lots of very nice touches including welcome basket. Lovely village, with lots of places to visit around within 5-20 miles. Garden/yard is in front of cottage and across very quiet road, however was not quite so convenient as having rear garden for the dog, not clear on the cottage description on the site. Shower in main bathroom, very low and not really useable for anyone over 5'8", however bath does have shower attachment. Overall a good stay and would recommend
